Today, we celebrate the 74th birthday of the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, Canada’s 21st Prime Minister.
Thanks to his invaluable experience in both business and politics, Paul Martin left a major mark on our country. As Minister of Finance for nearly a decade, Mr. Martin, on account of his excellent management, not only presented five consecutive balanced budgets but contributed greatly to reducing the national debt. Beyond our borders, he also worked tirelessly to promote and maintain Canada’s reputation abroad, by among other things, playing a key role in securing debt forgiveness for many of the world’s poorest countries.
All that Mr. Martin gave to his country, as a long-serving Member of Parliament and as Prime Minister, made him a vocal advocate for equality rights and the rights of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples. His negotiations of the landmark Kelowna Accord and of a national childcare program, are examples of his exceptional leadership. Still today, Mr. Martin continues to make significant contributions to Canadian society, most notably in the area of Aboriginal education and entrepreneurship through the Martin Aboriginal Initiative.
Paul, on behalf of all Liberals, we wish you a very happy birthday.
