Act Now to Stop the Carp Invasion

January 4, 2010

The Asian carp, a huge bottom feeder alien to North American waters, has already devastated to Mississippi River system, and is coming close to the Great Lakes.

The state of Michigan has now sued Illinois to block off access to the Great Lakes.  Canada and Ontario should be joining this action full square.

The carp is no joke.  It can grow to several feet.  It has a record of destroying other species.  Its arrival in Lake Michigan will be a disaster.  Blocking the canal into the lake is a vital step.  Genetic evidence of the carp has been found within about six miles of Lake Michigan.

Canada and Ontario need to wake up to this threat and join in the lawsuit that Michigan has started.

Protecting the Great Lakes from the invasion of predatory species is vital to protect a sports fishery that is central to life around these wonderful lakes.
